Russian troops leaving Belarus for Russia after Zapad 2021 exercise

Russian army units, which took part in the Belarusian-Russian strategic army exercise Zapad 2021, have started leaving Belarus in order to move to their permanent bases in Russia, the Russian Defense Ministry press service told BelTA.

According to the source, the Russian troops are now moving to railway stations and airfields where they board and load hardware onto railway platforms and military transport aircraft. Army engineers have started preparing aircraft for flying to home airfields in Russia.

The first few trains are already on the move. As part of the redeployment the Russian army units will have to travel for 800-1,200km using various means of transportation. While on the move they will practice elements of air defense, fight against enemy scouts and saboteurs, and logistics support for marching units.

In turn, the Air Force units, which took part in the Zapad 2021 exercise, have started relocating to their bases in Russia. IL-76, Tu-22M3, Su-35S, Su-30SM, Su-34 aircraft, Ka-52, Mi-28N, Mi-35, Mi-24, and Mi-8 helicopters were deployed during various episodes of the army exercise and will reach their home airfields within a short period of time.
