Belarus' upper house of parliament may consider bill on people's congress in January 2023

The bill on the Belarusian People's Congress may be considered by senators in January 2023, Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic Natalya Kochanova said during a meeting of the Council of Elders, BelTA has learned.

"Today we have practically finalized the bill on the Belarusian People's Congress. we will consider in January for it to be adopted by the House of Representatives and the Council of the Republic. We got actively involved in the work on this bill. We will have another state body that will play a stabilizing role in cases when the country will need important decisions. The Belarusian People's Congress will be such a body," Natalia Kochanova said.

The speaker noted that a lot of work has been done by senators to prepare amendments to the Constitution. "Members of the Council of the Republic were members of the Constitutional Commission. In my opinion, Belarusians showed their position when they came to the referendum and voted in support of the novelties to the Basic Law of the country. Now, as a follow-up to this, we are working on the laws that need to be brought into line. There are quite a lot of them," she emphasized.

As BelTA has reported, the bill “On Belarusian People's Congress” passed the first reading at a sitting of the ninth session of the House of Representatives of the seventh convocation on 20 December.
