Details about development of Belarus' own vaccine revealed

BelVitunipharm Director Sergei Bolshakov told the STV TV channel about progress to develop a Belarusian vaccine, BelTA informs.

This year the company marks its 93rd anniversary. For more than 60 years BelVitunipharm has been working with vaccines in one way or another. Various technologies have been developed and tested over this time. This made it possible to create the first Belarusian vaccine. According to Sergei Bolshakov, the platform for creating a vaccine was tested on the COVID-19 virus. This platform can also work with influenza, hepatitis, smallpox and a number of other diseases.

A new building as big as more than 10,000m2 is under construction on the territory of the enterprise. “The veterinary vaccine workshop is two times smaller than the workshop for human vaccines. This is because of very strict sanitary requirements. Sanitary standards for producing veterinary vaccines are very high and they are even 4- 5 times higher when it comes to production of human vaccines,” Sergei Bolshakov emphasized.

He noted that Belarus has enough specialists for this industry. “I would like to thank the National Academy of Sciences, the Healthcare Ministry, and the Education Ministry for getting educational institutions involved. Belarusian State University, Belarusian State Technological University, Vitebsk State University, Polessky State University have biotechnology faculties,” Bolshakov Sergei added.
