Latvia's ban on Belarus-registered cars effective since 1 November

Latvia will be able to confiscate cars with Belarusian license plates starting from 1 November after the ban on Belarus-registered cars entered into force in the neighboring country, BelTA learned from the State Customs Committee.

The State Customs Committee recalled that in September the Latvian parliament passed an amendment to the Law on Road Traffic obliging owners of Belarus-registered cars to either take them out of the country or re-register them by 31 October. Otherwise, the vehicle may be confiscated.

According to Belarus' Consulate General in Daugavpils, since 31 October Belarus-registered vehicles falling under HS Code 8703 (Motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons with the capacity of under 10 people) will be banned from the territory of the neighboring country.

The ban does not apply to buses carrying out regular international bus services between countries unless they fall under HS Code 8703.

The ban does not extend to Belarusian vehicles intended for diplomatic and consular missions in the territory of Latvia.
