Progress in forming Belarusian People’s Congress reviewed
The formation of the Belarusian People’s Congress proceeds sufficiently publicly, BelTA learned from Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Igor Karpenko.
Igor Karpenko said: “Candidates for delegates to the Belarusian People’s Congress are being nominated now. This process will end on 31 March. Elections of delegates to the Belarusian People’s Congress will take place on 1-10 April. In other words, the large electoral cycle that we launched on the single voting day will end with the opening of the Belarusian People’s Congress.”
In his words, the formation of the Belarusian People’s Congress proceeds rather publicly. “You know that the principle of formation of the Belarusian People’s Congress is determined by the legislation and the Constitution. A third of the delegates will be part of the Belarusian People’s Congress due to the offices they hold, including elected members of the House of Representatives and the Council of the Republic of the eighth convocation. Apart from that, delegates will be elected to the Belarusian People’s Congress from among members of municipal councils of deputies according to the quotas the CEC has distributed among oblasts,” the CEC head noted. “You have to understand that all the 60 members of the Minsk City Council of Deputies will automatically become delegates to the Belarusian People’s Congress. And according to the quotas we have also distributed, five civil society entities will elect 80 representatives each. They will represent a serious slice of the civil society in the composition of the Belarusian People’s Congress. This is how the maximum number of Belarusian People’s Congress delegates can be up to 1,200 people.”
