Belarus' nuclear instrumentation praised

01.02.2022

Belarus has a high level of nuclear instrumentation, Aleksandr Lobko, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Deputy Director for Research at the Institute for Nuclear Problems of Belarusian State University, said during the round table “University Science Today: Priority Areas of Development” hosted by the BelTA press center.

“University science should generate knowledge for the most part. Indeed, when teachers themselves are involved in research, the quality of teaching is completely different. We work with the Faculty of Physics, mostly with departments that deal with radiation technologies. We invite students for internship programs, after that some of them stay at our institute, others are hired by companies engaged in nuclear instrumentation,” said Aleksandr Lobko.

According to him, Belarus has a high level of nuclear instrumentation. “After the Chernobyl disaster the requirements for radiation measuring equipment changed dramatically. There had not been such accidents before and the available equipment could only measure the consequences of a nuclear explosion. It was not accurate enough to be used in the Chernobyl response effort. Therefore, several state programs were launched to develop the necessary equipment. Our institute developed solutions that were later incorporated by various enterprises. Some new companies were set up. The well-known enterprise Adani is one of them. It makes all kinds of portal monitors, airport security systems, X-ray equipment. Another company, Atomtex, supplied dosimeters to Japan after the Fukushima disaster. Our graduates also work there,” the deputy director noted.
