The Republican Council for Historic Policy under the Belarus President Administration and the interagency commission on historic enlightenment under the Russian president have signed a memorandum of understanding, BelTA has learned.
The ceremony took place in the Modern Belarusian Statehood Museum. The document was signed by Head of the Belarus President Administration, Chairman of the Republican Council for Historic Policy Igor Sergeyenko and Vladimir Medinsky, Aide to the President of Russia, chairman of the interagency commission on historic enlightenment. The memorandum provides for setting up a Belarusian-Russian commission on history. A Belarusian-Russian expert advisory board on history, which was established during the first Belarusian-Russian forum of historians in Moscow in June 2023, is the working body of the commission on history.
The parties undertake to coordinate efforts to protect historical truth, preserve memory about the common history of Belarus and Russia, which is reflected in textbooks among other things, and promote enlightening, expert, consulting, and humanitarian activities of public importance in the field of history.
Igor Sergeyenko remarked that historians of Belarus and Russia have started interacting more actively recently. Joint events are being held and textbooks are being published. He is convinced that Belarus-Russia cooperation in this field will continue developing successfully.
In turn, Vladimir Medinsky is convinced that the signing of the memorandum will encourage the scientific community to interact more tightly and will allow the countries to implement new interesting projects.
Historians of Belarus and Russia already have a significant track record of fruitful interaction. They cooperate within the framework of the international associations of history institutes of the CIS states, the association of Belarusian and Russian historians “Union initiative of memory and accord”. In 2023 on the basis of the national concept of domestic history the Academy of Public Administration under the President of Belarus, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russian State University for the Humanities, and Belarusian State University teamed up to publish a textbook on the brief history of Belarusian lands and the Belarusian state for students of Russian higher education institutions.
The signing of the memorandum of understanding begins a brand new stage in coordinating the interaction of Belarusian and Russian historians.
