Belarusian universities perform well in international rankings, Head of the Main Department for Vocational Training of the Education Ministry of Belarus Sergei Kasperovich told reporters on 25 October, BelTA has learned.
“As far as higher learning is concerned, Belarusian universities perform pretty well, in particular, the leader of the Belarusian higher education - Belarusian State University - that is celebrating its 100th anniversary these days. This university holds consistently high positions in international rankings; it ranks within the top 300 in the rankings that feature 30,000 universities around the world. This is a good result. In fact, many countries invest huge resources into their universities so that they maintain leading positions in rankings. Although our country takes part in a number of programs, it does not earmark resources specifically to enable domestic universities move up the rankings. And this is right, because the main thing is the quality of education, which is the main criterion of competitiveness,” Sergei Kasperovich said.
Belarus is working hard to maintain the high quality of education at all levels. “One of the objectives of the state-run program Education and Youth Policy is to improve the physical infrastructure of educational facilities. Infrastructure has a very important impact on the quality of vocational training. The availability of advanced laboratories, teaching and laboratory facilities, materials, reagents - these are all extremely important for the quality of education. Our country has developed a system to improve competencies and facilitate professional growth of the teaching staff. We also promote academic mobility of students; public funds are allocated for this purpose in addition to other sources of financing. We send Belarusian teachers to leading foreign educational institutions and enterprises. I would also like to mention a program called ‘Invited Lecturer', when we invite leading experts from abroad to deliver lectures on topical themes,” Sergei Kasperovich said.
