Lukashenko: Afghanistan is facing a humanitarian crisis

16.09.2021

The developments in Afghanistan will have a lot of repercussions, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at the session of the CSTO Collective Security Council in Dushanbe on 16 September, BelTA has learned.

The head of state pointed to the escalation of tension around Afghanistan. He drew attention to the unstable political situation in the country. “Afghanistan is obviously experiencing a humanitarian crisis that will lead to all kinds of negative consequences, including challenges and threats to the CSTO collective security,” the president said.

According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, in the current circumstances, the CSTO adequately responds to challenges and threats, at least at the current stage.

The situation in Afghanistan will also be discussed at a joint meeting of the leaders of the SCO and CSTO countries on 17 September. Aleksandr Lukashenko is confident that in the current conditions the interaction of the two organizations can facilitate international dialogue and help promote mutual interests. “This pertains not only to issues facing Central Asia, but also ways to counter foreign geopolitical influence,” the head of state noted.

The Belarusian leader urged to maintain positive dynamics in expanding cooperation between the CSTO and international organizations.
